Obong Victor Attah: The Profile Of An Acclaimed Statesman

Obong Victor Bassey Adiaha Attah was born on 20 November 1938 in Okop Ndua Erong, Asutan Ekpe in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

He did his elementary school in the Asutan Native Authority School. He did his post primary school in the famous St Patrick's College, Ikot Ansa, Calabar and completed in 1956.

Victor was born into a wealthy family. His father was the second Nigerian to earn a degree in Agriculture and the first to earn a Master's degree in same courtesy of a scholarship program of the defunct Ibibio Union. His mother on the other hand was a teacher,women leader and politician.

Obong Victor Attah studied Art and had a diploma at the famous Leeds College of Art and later enrolled for a degree program at the Liverpool University and graduated with a degree in building science in 1965.

He won a scholarship to study at Columbia University in New York where he bagged a Master's degree in advanced architural design and planning.

He also attended the famous Kennedy Graduate School of Government, Havard University. After graduating, Obong Victor Attah began to practise as an Architect in United States, Thrinidad and Tobago and Nigeria.

He worked as Consultant to serveral international Organizations and Governments including The British Overseas Development Agency where he oversaw the execution of development Projects in Nigeria, South Africa and the Carribeans. He is credited to designing the campuses of the Universities of Calabar and Port Harcourt.

Obong Victor Attah also served as the National President of the Nigerian Institute of Architecture.

He was part of People Democratic Movement of Shehu Musa YarAdua which latter collapsed in to the People Democratic Party.

He contested and won the governorship election in Akwa Ibom State on the platform of the people Democratic Party in 1999 and was reelected in 2003.

As Governor, Obong Victor Attah initiated and executed to varing degree some major projects in Akwa Ibom State including, Ibom International Airport, Akwa Ibom State University of Science and Technology,The Ibom le meridien hotel with eighteen holes International golf course and sundry others. He also fought against the reintroduction of the infamous offshore and onshore oil dichotomy which was intended to deprive the South South States and Akwa Ibom State in particular of income of oil mined from the deep ocean. He however failed to a actualize the Uyo infotech Village which was designed to replicate the famous Silicon Valley in the USA.

He was made the chairman of the forum of Governors of the 36 stattes of Nigeria. As Governor,he received numerous awards across Nigeria, Africa and the World. He has also been awarded with numerous chieftaincy titles in and out of Akwa Ibom State. He has equally received many honorary doctorate degrees.

Obong Victor Attah contested for the presidential ticket of of People Democratic Party in 2007 but withdrew midway.

Obong Victor Attah latter retired from active politics and joined Executive Action a Consultancy firm which is devoted to helping corporate organizations manage and survive in different business tarrains.
